John Ulloa

John Ulloa is a percussionist,
performer, and educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. His musical career spans over two
decades, and he has carved his niche in the Bay Area music scene performing and teaching
within various contexts. John holds a Master of Arts degree in Latin American
history from San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in history from San
Francisco State University. He frequently lectures on the history of Afro-Cuban
musical and religious traditions. Comfortable with playing in various contexts, John
is well versed in a variety of musical styles including Latin, Rock, and R & B.
He has studied with Afro-Cuban percussion masters both in Cuba and in the United States
including Orestes Vilató, Michael Spiro, and Daniel Rodriguez. In keeping with the
West Coast Latin Jazz tradition, John cites Mongo Santamaria, Armando Peraza, Cal Tjader,
and Poncho Sanchez as his main influences. Besides Mestizo, John Ulloas
performance and recording credits include Dr. Locos Rockin Jalapeño Band,
WAR, The Mario Flores Band, Pete Escovedo, Benny Velardes Supercombo, Stymie and the
Pimp Jonz Luv Orchestra, Ruben Estrada, and members of Los Lobos.
